Seals and Gaskets: Service and Repair
Right Side

NOTE:  The following special tools and testing equipment are necessary for this work:

VW 681 - Extractor lever

3382 - Pressure piece

Removal

-

Remove right-front wheel.

-

Remove heat shield for right drive axle.

-

Remove right drive axle.

-

Prevent drive flange from turning using mandrel and remove center bolt from drive flange (arrow).

-

Place oil drain pan underneath transmission to catch spilled fluid.

-

Pull out right drive flange.

-

Remove sealing ring for right drive flange using extractor lever VW 681,

Installation 

NOTE:

The open side of the sealing ring faces the transmission.

^

Lubricate the outer circumference and the sealing lips of the sealing ring with gear oil or coat with thin layer of Vaseline.

Drive sealing ring for right drive flange in to stop using pressure piece 3382.

-

Sealing ring must be seated at uniform depth (around circumference) in housing.

-

Check final drive fluid level and correct as necessary.

-

Tighten the following to:

Right drive flange to transmission: 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
Drive axle to drive flange: 77 Nm (57 ft lb)
Drive axle to wheel hub M16 bolt (always replace): 200 Nm (148 ft lb) + 90°
Heat shield to transmission: 23 Nm (17 ft lb)
