Axle Shaft: Service and Repair
Overhaul

NOTE:  When replacing a CV joint boot, grease joint again if necessary.

Grease fill for outer CV joints with grease G-6 or equivalent: 
-

Diameter 98 mm 3.86 inch 

-

Total amount. of grease: 120 g (4.2 oz) 

-

Grease in joint: 80 g (2.8 oz) 

-

Grease in boot: 40 g (1.4 oz)

Inner tripod joint greased with 140 g (4.9 oz) of G 000 605 or equivalent grease. 

Component Notes and Information 

NOTE:  During service procedures, refer to the component location illustration above and component notes below.

Drive axle with tripod joint

Supplied as replacement part with joint boot and packed with grease 

-

Right, left sides are different lengths

Clamps 
-

Always replace 

-

Tightening refer to Fig. 1 below.

Inner joint boot 
-

Check for cracks and abrasion 

-

To replace, press off outer CV joint 

-

When pushing onto axle shaft, grease bead on axle shaft and carefully slide joint boot on with wedge VAG 1474/5 (part of tool VAG 1474)
refer to Fig. 4 below.

Clamp 
-

Always replace 

-

Tightening refer to Fig. 1 below.

Outer CV joint boot 
-

Check for cracks and abrasion 

-

Ventilate boot briefly before tightening small clamp Fig. 3 below.

Clamp

Always replace

Tightening refer to Fig. 1 below.
