Seals and Gaskets: Service and Repair
Transfer Case Input Shaft Seal

NOTE:

On the left side of the intermediate flange there is an inspection hole for detection of oil leakage from the double sealing ring in the drive pinion
and the double sealing ring in the intermediate flange.

The following special tool is necessary for this work:

3404 - Thrust piece

Removal

-

Remove distributor, refer to Servicing/Replacement. See: Service and Repair

Remove front final drive intermediate' flange refer to Replacement. See: Service and Repair

Drive double sealing ring out in direction of distributor gear using suitable mandrel.

Installation

-

The sealing ring is installed in reverse order of removal. In addition, the following work steps have to be carried out.

Check sealing ring seat in transmission housing for damage; rework if necessary.
Slide double sealing ring onto thrust piece 3404sothat larger and most projecting outer ring (arrow) of sealing ring faces tool.
Drive double sealing ring in to stop using thrust piece 3404.

CAUTION:  If the intermediate flange is not placed carefully on the pinion shaft, the sealing lips of the gasket could be damaged
