2. Remove spark plugs.
3. Rotate crankshaft by hand to set piston of relevant cylinder to Bottom Dead Center (BDC).
4. Thread pressure hose tool No. VW 653/3, or equivalent, with seal into spark plug hole until hand-tight, then apply continuous air pressure of at

least 6 bar (87 psi).

5. Remove intake side valve springs and seal as follows:

a. Install adjustable rod tool No. 2036, or equivalent and adjust bearing to height of stay bolt.
b. Use lever tool No. VW 541/1 and thrust piece tool No. VW 541/5, or equivalent, to compress and remove valve spring.

NOTE:  Tight valve keepers can be loosened by tapping lightly on lever tool with a hammer.

c. Remove valve stem seals with extractor tool No. 3346, or equivalent.

5. Remove exhaust side valve springs and seal as follows:

a. Use lever tool and thrust piece to compress and remove valve spring.

NOTE:Tight valve keepers can be loosened by tapping lightly on lever tool with a hammer.

b. Remove valve stem seals with extractor tool.

INSTALLATION

1. Temporarily install plastic sleeve -A- onto valve stem.
2. Lubricate valve stem seal -B- with oil, then insert into seal driver tool No. 3365, or equivalent.
3. Carefully push seal over plastic sleeve and onto valve stem.
4. Remove plastic sleeve.

NOTE:  When installing valve stem seals, always use a plastic sleeve to protect the seals from being damaged by the valve keeper grooves.

5. Reverse remaining removal procedures to install.
