Remove bearing outer race -1- and adjusting shim -2- from transmission housing by hand.

Note:  The adjustment shim is correctly sized and must not be replaced with one of different thickness.

Remove left drive flange.

^

Remove double sealing ring using release lever VW 681.

Note:

The release lever must be placed behind the two sealing lips of the sealing ring.

^

Do not place the release lever on the outer circumference of the sealing ring. Otherwise, the contact surface in the transmission housing will be
damaged.

^

Guide the release lever carefully when pulling out the seal.

Installing

Check sealing ring seat in transmission housing for damage and repair if necessary.

Note:  Coat the outer surface and the sealing lips of the sealing ring with a thin layer of Vaseline.
