Oil Filter Cap, Interference with Generator (GEN) Coolant Pipe

Model(s): 
A8L with 4.2L (engine code BFM)

2004 > 2005

Condition

-

During engine oil change service, Technician may find that the generator coolant return pipe -arrow- may interfere with removal or installation of the
oil filter cap.

May be caused by an incorrect coolant pipe tolerance allowing the pipe to slightly overlap the oil filter cap.

Production

Pipe with additional clearance installed beginning with VIN: 4E_5N005555.

Service

Tip:

Vehicles should only be retrofitted if oil filter cap cannot be installed easily.

If there is enough clearance to easily install oil filter cap:

No further action is required DO NOT perform this Technical Bulletin.

If there is NOT enough clearance to easily install oil filter cap:

Retrofit the generator coolant return pipe as follows.

Disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap (see Repair Manual Group 27 - Battery; Starter; Generator Cruise control, Battery, disconnecting and
reconnecting).

Drain coolant (see Repair Manual Group 19-Engine - Cooling system, Cooling system, draining and filling).
