Warning Light For Catalytic Converter Monitoring (CAT) In Instrument Cluster, Checking

Meaning of Warning light for catalyst monitoring -K72-

The warning light for catalytic converter monitoring lights up when exhaust relevant malfunctions are recognized by the Engine Control Module (ECM).
Signal is transferred via CAN-Bus.

Component location of warning light for catalytic converter monitoring

NOTE:  The warning light for catalytic converter monitoring can blink or remain lit continuously. DTC memory must be checked in each case,
Diagnostic mode 3: Check DTC memory.  

-

Blinking: There is a malfunction that causes damage to the catalytic converter in this driving condition. In this case, vehicle must only be driven at
reduced power.

-

Continuously lit: There is a malfunction that causes increased emissions. Check DTC memory for Engine Control Module (ECM) and automatic
transmission.

-

DTC memory must still be checked if there are driveability problems or the customer has complained but the warning light for catalytic converter
monitoring is not lit, because malfunctions can be stored without causing the warning light for catalytic converter monitoring to light immediately.

Recommended special tools and equipment

V.A.G1526 multimeter or V.A.G1715 multimeter

V.A.G1594 connector test kit

Wiring diagram

Test requirement

-

The respective fuses of the Motronic fuel injection and ignition system must be OK.

If warning light for catalytic converter monitoring does not go out with engine running.

If Warning light for catalyst monitoring -K72- does not light up when ignition is switched on:

-

Remove instrument cluster:

-

Connect test box to wiring harness of Engine Control Module (ECM). See: Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems/Testing and
Inspection/Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes/Scan Tool Connecting

-

Check wire connections from ECM to warning light for catalytic converter monitoring according to wiring diagram, repair if necessary.

-

Erase DTC memory of Engine Control Module (ECM), Diagnostic mode 4: Reset/erase diagnostic data.

-

Generate readiness code.

If no malfunction is determined in wire connection between Engine Control Module (ECM) and instrument cluster:

-

Replace Engine Control Module (ECM) -J623-.

If Warning light for catalyst monitoring -K72- does not go out with engine running:

-

Check DTC memory, Diagnostic mode 3: Check DTC memory. 

If there is no malfunction present in DTC memory and warning light for catalytic converter monitoring does not go out:

-

Switch ignition off.

-

Remove instrument cluster:

-

Connect test box to wiring harness of Engine Control Module (ECM).  See: Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems/Testing and
Inspection/Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes/Scan Tool Connecting

Check wire connection between Engine Control Module (ECM) and instrument cluster, repair if necessary.
