Air Bag: Service Precautions
Safety Specifications When Working on Airbag

Testing, removing, installing and repair work may only be performed by qualified personnel.

Never use test lamp, voltmeter or ohmmeter for testing.

The airbag system may only be checked in its installed position using VAG1551/1552 scan tool. Exception: coil connector with slip ring.

When working on the airbag system, the battery Ground (GND) strap must be disconnected. No waiting time is necessary after disconnecting the
battery. When connecting the airbag system to a voltage source, no person must be present inside the vehicle.

Airbag parts should not be opened or repaired. Always use new pants.

Airbag unit has a scrap date. The scrap date is listed on a label.

Airbag III: Label on sun visor

Airbag V and 7: Label at bottom of B-pillar driver side.

After 14 years the airbag must be replaced.

When replacing an airbag remove scrap date label from new airbag and place it over the old one
-
For vehicles without adhesive label on B-pillar enter airbag change in service-booklet.

Always observe the following sequence when replacing an airbag unit:

Remove old airbag unit and set down with padded side facing upward.

Remove new airbag unit from packaging and set down with padded side facing upward.

Immediately place old airbag unit in packaging.

Install new airbag unit in vehicle.

The airbag units should be installed immediately after removing them from their packaging.

If the work is interrupted, the airbag unit should again be placed in its packaging.

It is not permitted to leave the airbag unit unattended.

Airbag units which have been removed should be stored so that the padded side is facing up.

Airbag units that drop onto a hard surface or show damage, should not be installed.

Never treat airbag units with grease, cleaning agents or the like. An airbag unit must never be exposed to temperatures in excess of 100 °C (212 °F
) (even for brief periods).
