Measure deepest distance -a- (flange to pinion) and -b- (flange to pinion nut).
These measurements are used to check installation.
Note:
The following work sequence is shown with the final drive removed for better representation.

Install retainer 3028 and remove pinion nut.

Pull off flange using puller VW 391
