Accumulator HVAC: Service and Repair

Accumulator, Removing And Installing

NOTE:  Depending on vehicle design, there are various types of accumulator and differing fitting locations.

Removing

-

Discharge refrigerant circuit.

-

Remove front bumper.

-

Move lock carrier to service position.

-

If necessary, remove charge-air cooler/secondary-air pump motor (not required on all vehicles).

-

Screw out bolts -A- and detach refrigerant pipes -B- and -C-.

-

Screw out bolts -D-.

-

Detach accumulator.

NOTE:

-

Seal open pipe connections.

-

Attachment of refrigerant pipes differs depending on engine version.

Keep accumulator closed as long as possible; only remove caps immediately prior to installation (accumulator contains a desiccant bag which soon
becomes saturated with moisture and thus unusable when accumulator is open).

Installing

Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:
Before installing accumulator.

NOTE:

-

Accumulator connections may be marked "IN" (from evaporator) and "Out" (to compressor).

Accumulator removed contains refrigerant oil which must be returned to refrigerant circuit (with new accumulator).

Adjustment of oil quantity depends on nature of complaint.

If, for example, accumulator has been damaged in an accident (no loss of refrigerant, no ingress of moisture and dirt into refrigerant circuit),
air conditioner can be serviced by weighing old and new accumulator without the need for extensive repair work. Pour refrigerant oil into new
accumulator until it weighs the same as the accumulator removed.

If an indeterminate amount of refrigerant oil has escaped or dirt and moisture have penetrated into refrigerant circuit, it must be cleaned using
compressed air and nitrogen.

Replace O-ring seals -E-.
