Auxiliary Air Valve (Idle Speed): Testing and Inspection

NOTE: The following tests are to be performed on a cold engine.

Quick Test:  
Start the engine.  Working quickly, clamp the hose from the air valve to the air intake boot closed with needle nosed pliers .  If the rpm drops
substantially, the air valve is working.  Clamping the hose when the engine is warm should have little or no effect.

Checking the Air Valve:

1.

Remove the hoses from the auxiliary air valve.

2.

Using a light and a mirror if necessary, check position of air shutter.

3.

At a temperature of 20°C (68°F), the opening of the shutter must be visible.

4.

Turn the ignition on.  Approximately five minutes later, the shutter should close off the opening.

5.

If the auxiliary air valve does not work, proceed as follows:

a. Check to see that 12vdc  is available at the auxiliary air valve connector.
b. Check the ground circuit for continuity using an ohmmeter.  Resistance value should be less than 1 ohm.

6.

If the above values are not correct repair the faulty circuit.

7.

If the auxiliary air device does not operate satisfactorily, replace it.
