Constant Velocity Joint: Testing and Inspection
Front Triple Roller Joint Outer Constant Velocity Joint Checking

Outer constant velocity (CV) joint, checking

In order to replace the grease due to contamination or if the ball tracks must be checked for wear and damage, the joint must be disassembled.

Removing

Before disassembling, mark position of ball hub in relation to ball cage and joint body with an electric marker or whetstone.

Swivel ball hub and ball cage.

Remove balls one after the other.

Turn the cage until the two rectangular windows - arrow - are level with the joint body.

Lift cage out together with hub.

-

Swivel one segment of hub into rectangular window of cage.

Fold hub out of cage.

The 6 balls in each joint belong to one tolerance group. Check stub axle, hub, cage and balls for pitting and signs of seizure. Excessive backlash in
the joint will cause knocking or jolts under load change; in such cases the joint must be replaced. Polished areas and visible ball track marks are
not a reason for replacing the joint.

Installing

Install cage with hub into joint body.

-

Press in balls one after the other from opposite sides, taking care to re-establish original position of hub relative to cage and joint body.
