Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL), Significance

Function of Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) -K83- 

If the engine control module detects faults detrimental to emissions, such faults are indicated by activation of the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL).

The engine control module activates the MIL after switching on the ignition. Shortly after the engine is started, the MIL goes out if the engine control
module has not recognized any faults detrimental to the emissions and there is also no problem with activation of the lamp by the engine control module.

The engine control module activates the MIL if faults detrimental to emissions are detected while the engine is running. At the same time, an entry is
made in the engine control module DTC memory.

The MIL may flash or light constantly. Fault memory is always to be interrogated.

Constantly lit MIL 
A fault detrimental to emissions has occurred. Interrogate fault memory for the Motronic control module or the automatic transmission (if equipped).

The fault memory must be interrogated in the event of engine running problems or a customer complaint if the MIL does not light. Faults may also have
been stored which do not activate the MIL immediately, but rather only if the fault is detected again after the next engine start.

Flashing MIL 
A fault has been detected which will cause catalytic converter damage in this driving status (e.g. misfiring). In such situations the vehicle may only be
driven at reduced power.
