Safety Precautions For Side Airbag

WARNING:

-

Testing, installation and servicing work must only be performed by properly trained personnel.

-

The same safety precautions that apply to the driver's and front passenger side airbags also apply to the side airbags.

CAUTION:

-

Only install genuine Audi seat and backrest covers approved for use with side airbag (identifiable by airbag label stitched on fabric).

-

Do not install any type of extra covers over the backrests, as this would impair the function of the side airbags.

-

Do not install any type of seat cushions, mats or the like which would impair the function of the seat-occupied sensor and/or airbags.

NOTE:  Seat-occupied sensor mat is not installed on driver's seat.

CAUTION:

-

In vehicles without heated seats, the seats are equipped with dummy seat heating elements (heating element without a wire).

-

The foam padding in the backrest must not be cut away in the vicinity of the side airbag.

-

When installing, make sure seam for side airbag is straight.

-

All upholstery clips (metal and plastic clips) must be replaced.

-

Always use genuine upholstery clips.

-

When installing, all upholstery clips must be installed in the same positions as the original ones.

-

If the seat cover fabric is damaged (tears, burn marks, etc.) in the vicinity of the side airbag, the cover must be replaced for safety
reasons, otherwise the side airbag will not inflate properly.

-

Do not carry out repairs on the backrest cover fabric near the side airbag (original fabric has special thread and exactly defined seams).

-

Always replace backrest padding after side airbag has been triggered.

-

If side airbag units are replaced, remove airbag number sticker from the new unit and stick it over the old one on the seat pan.

-

Never use upholstery needles or poke any other sharp objects through the seat cover fabric in the vicinity of the airbag and sensor mat.

CAUTION:

-

All damaged components must be replaced after an accident. The original undeployed airbag unit can still be used if no signs of damage
are found.

-

Side airbag units have a limited service life (sticker on passenger side B-pillar). If side airbag units are replaced, remove replacement date
sticker from new unit and stick it over the old one on the B-pillar. Side airbag unit and sticker must be replaced after 14 years.

-

If the vehicle does not have a sticker on the B-pillar, an entry must be made in the Service Schedule to record the airbag replacement.
