Valve Guide: Testing and Inspection

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

‹› Dial gauge holder (VW 387)

‹› Dial gauge 

Test Sequence

Insert valve into valve guide.

‹› Valve stem tip must seal with valve guide.

‹› Due to differences in valve stem diameter, make sure that only intake valves are used to check intake valve guides, and only exhaust valves are

used to check exhaust valve guides.

Determine tilt clearance.

‹› Wear limit of intake and exhaust valve guide: 0.80 mm.

‹› If wear limit is exceeded, re-measure using new valves.

‹› If wear limit is still exceeded, replace cylinder head. The valve guides cannot be replaced.

‹› If valve is replaced during repair, use new valve for measurement.
