Speedometer Head: Testing and Inspection
Speed Sensor, Checking
Speed sensor (speedometer)
-
Connect VAG 1598/4 adapter harness to 26-point instrument cluster connector (red).
-
Connect adapter harness to VAG 1598A test box.
-
Set digital multimeter (Fluke 83 or equivalent) to AC volt range.

Connect multimeter between sockets 8 and 14 of VAG 1598A test box.
-
Place transmission in neutral and apply parking brake.
-
Secure vehicle with wheel chocks to prevent rolling.

Raise left front of vehicle at proper lift point until wheel turns freely.
-
Place jack stand under vehicle for safety.
-
Switch ignition ON.

Slowly rotate left front wheel by hand.
-
Must be approx. 4.5 volts
If NOT:
-
Check wiring for open circuit according to wiring diagram, repair as necessary, or
-
Replace speed sensor.
