Engine Control Module: Component Tests and General Diagnostics
Checking Engine Speed Signal
Note:
Only perform the following check if there is no tachometer reading.

Connect VAG 1598 Test Box, using VAG 1598/5 adapter cable, to ECM. Refer to VAG 1598 Pin Out Box Connecting See: Testing and
Inspection/Scan Tool Testing and Procedures/Scan Tool Testing/Scan Tool Connecting and Initial Checks/Connecting and Testing VAG 1598
Pin Out Box

Connect VW 1367 engine tester or equivalent, to perform RPM measurement. Connect as per manufacturer's instructions.

Using VW 1594 connector test kit, connect signal wire (green terminal) to Test Box terminal 30.

Run engine at idle.

RPM must be displayed on VW 1367
If YES:
-
Switch OFF engine and remove instrument cluster.
Engine Control Module Harness Connector

Check continuity between ECM terminal 40 (terminal 40 on Test Box), and instrument cluster, using wiring diagram.
If wiring is OK:
-
Repair malfunction in instrument cluster.
If RPM is NOT displayed on VW 1367:

Check for short circuit to positive or GND between ECM terminal 40 (terminal 40 on Test Box), and instrument cluster, using wiring diagram.
