Barometric Pressure Sensor: Testing and Inspection

Connect VAG 1551 scan tool. Refer to Connecting and Operating VAG 1551 Scan Tool See: Testing and Inspection/Scan Tool Testing and
Procedures/Scan Tool Testing/Scan Tool Connecting and Initial Checks/Connecting and Operating VAG 1551 Scan Tool

Advance through program until display appears as shown:

Rapid data transfer   

HELP

Select function   XX

Let engine idle.

-

Select "Read measuring value block" function 08 using VAG 1551 Scan Tool input display group number 02.

Check display in channel 4.

Note: The air pressure value detected by the pressure sensor reflects altitude, as well as any pressure variations due to weather. Weather-related
fluctuations are generally under (+/-) 50 mbar, except in extreme conditions or in tropical climates. At sea level, the air pressure under standard
weather conditions is about 1013 mbar and decreases by approx. 100 mbar per 1000 meters (3281 ft) of elevation.

If 986 mbar is constantly displayed or if display value differs significantly from the expected:

^

Check voltage supply to pressure sensor

^

Check circuit wiring and connections

Note: 

^

If the pressure sensor fails, the Engine Control Module (ECM) will automatically assume an air pressure value equivalent to an altitude of
30 meters (98.4 ft). This default value yields an air pressure reading of "968 mbar," which displays continuously.

Since the default value will also cause a malfunction to be stored in Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory, the DTC memory must be
erased once the malfunction is repaired. Note, however, that erasing the DTC memory will not erase the default value assumed by the
ECM. The default value will have to be erased seperately as described at the end off this article. 

3-Pin Connector

Checking voltage:

-

Disconnect harness connector to pressure sensor.

-

Switch ignition ON.

-

Using VW 1594 connector test kit, connect DVOM to the following terminals, in turn:
a  Terminals 1 and 3

Must be 4.5-5.5 volts.

b  Terminals 2 and 3

^

Must be 4.5-5.5 volts.

If both specified values NOT obtained:
-

Replace pressure sensor.

If one specified value NOT obtained:
-

Check ECM and wiring to ECM, as described in the following procedure.

Checking pressure sensor wiring:

-

Switch ignition OFF.

-

Connect VAG 1598 Test Box to Engine Control Module (ECM) wiring harness using VAG 1598/5 adapter cable.

ECM remains disconnected.

Using wiring diagram, check following circuits for continuity or shorts, by testing at terminals indicated:

Pressure sensor terminal number 1 to VAG 1598 test box socket number 9.

Must be 1.0 ohm maximum.

Pressure sensor terminal number 2 to VAG 1598 test box socket number 12.
^

Must be 1.0 ohm maximum.

Pressure sensor terminal number 3 to VAG 1598 test box socket number 30.
