Knock Sensor: Testing and Inspection

Note:  

The knock sensors cannot be checked electrically. Check DTC memory. For satisfactory function of the knock sensors, exact compliance with the
tightening torque of 20 Nm (15 ft lb) is important. Check the harness connection from knock sensor to wiring harness for corrosion.

Connect VAG 1598 Test Box to Engine Control Module (ECM) wiring harness using VAG 1598/5 adaptor cable. Refer to VAG 1598 Pin Out

Disconnect knock sensors at harness connections.

3-Pin Connector

-

Check wires for continuity and/or short circuits to each other using Digital Volt Ohm Multimeter (DVOM), as described below:

Short circuit: 1.0 ohm maximum.

^

Open circuit: approximately 1 M ohm to infinite ohms.

Knock Sensor 1 G61 - (front):

-

Between brown sensor harness connector terminal 1 and Test Box socket 11 (signal wire).

-

Between brown sensor harness connector terminal 2 and Test Box socket 30 (sensor ground connection to ECM).

-

Between brown sensor harness connector terminal 3 and Test Box socket 19 (shielding on ground). 

Knock Sensor 2 G66 - (rear):

-

Between blue sensor harness connector terminal 1 and Test Box socket 29 (signal wire).

-

Between blue sensor harness connector terminal 2 and Test Box socket 30 (sensor ground connection to ECM).

-

Between blue sensor harness connector terminal 3 and Test Box socket 19 (shielding on ground).

Engine Control Module Harness Connector

-

If necessary repair open and/or short circuit in wiring between the respective sensor harness connector and the ECM harness connector
terminals.

Note:

Only use gold plated terminals when repairing terminals in the knock sensor connectors.

If a DTC code is displayed for the respective knock sensor even if the wiring connection is OK.

Replace knock sensor.
