Level Control System Sensor

General Information

Vehicles with electronic damping control and/or HID headlamps have standard automatic headlamp range control.

To function properly, the electronic damping control and automatic headlamp range control system need information about compression travel or
rebound travel at the front and rear axles.

For this, the position of the left/right trapezium arm in relation to the body is transferred via a coupling rod to left rear level control system sensor
(G76) and right rear level control system sensor (G77). These transmit electrical signals to the electronic damping control module (J250) and/or
left/right high-intensity gas discharge lamp control module (J343/344).

At the front axle, these signals are transmitted from left front level control system sensor (G78) and right front level control sensor (G289) to
electronic damping control module (J250) and/or left/right high-intensity gas discharge lamp control module (J343/344).

These signals are required for determining vehicle level.

The automatic headlight range control reacts independently to changes in vehicle level.

The vehicle level can change in the following situations:

‹› Trailer mode

‹› Different load conditions; vehicle empty, vehicle partially or fully loaded

‹› Programming the control position and checking the headlamp basic setting is necessary on vehicles with electronic damping control if

‹› The lower transverse link has been removed and reinstalled or replaced 

‹› The upper transverse link was removed and installed or replaced,

‹› The subframe was replaced, 

‹› Installation work has been performed on the level control system sensor, 

‹› The level control system sensor has been replaced,

‹› The level control system sensor coupling rod threaded connection was loosened at the lower transverse link.

Headlight basic setting. 

On vehicles with electronic controlled damping, program the control position => [ Control Position, Programing with VAS 5051B ] See: Testing and
Inspection. 

If the control position was reprogrammed on vehicles with lane assist, the directional stabilization assistance control module (J759) must be
re-calibrated => [ Lane Assist Calibration Procedure ] See: Accessories and Optional Equipment/Collision Avoidance and Parking Assist

Replacing Level Control System Sensor with Subframe Installed
