Air Injection Pump Relay: Testing and Inspection
With Manufacturer's Scan Tool

Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299-, checking 

NOTE:  The secondary air injection pump relay is located in the triple relay carrier in the electronics box in the plenum chamber.

Connect vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 or V.A.G 1551 Scan Tool and select engine electronics control unit with
"Address word" 01 or. For this purpose, ignition must be switched on.

Start Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) and activate secondary air injection pump relay.

Secondary air injection pump relay -J299-

Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299- actuates secondary air injection (AIR) pump motor -V101-. This runs in intervals. 

If Secondary air injection (AIR) pump motor -V101- does not run in intervals:

-

Disconnect 2-pin connector from secondary air injection pump motor and connect diode test lamp VAG 1527 to disconnected connector using
auxiliary cables from VAG 1594.

Repeat Output DTM.

If the diode test lamp now flashes during the DTM 

-

Replace Secondary air injection pump motor - V101-:

If the diode lamp does not flash and the secondary air injection pump relay does not click, check actuation of secondary air injection pump relay. 

If the diode lamp does not flash but the secondary air injection pump relay clicks, check voltage supply of secondary air injection pump relay:

Check fuse for secondary air injection pump relay -J299-.

If the fuse is not faulty:

-

Remove secondary air injection pump relay from relay carrier.

Check voltage supply (positive 30) for relay.

-

If no malfunctions are found in voltage supply for relay replace Secondary air injection (AIR) pump relay -J299-.

Checking actuation of secondary air injection pump relay 

-

Switch ignition off.

-

Connect test box VAG 1598/31 to wiring harness for engine control module; do not connect engine control module.

-

Remove secondary air injection pump relay from relay carrier.

-

Check for open circuit in following wiring connections:

Test box VAG 1598/31 socket

Secondary air injection pump relay, contact

Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohm
