Side airbag connector

‹› Only the old side airbag modules have a connector directly on the airbag module. The new side airbag modules do not have a connector in this

location. They are equipped with a continuous wiring harness => [ Modular Wiring Routing, from 07.2006, Assembly Overview ] See: Body and
Frame/Seats/Service and Repair/Removal and Replacement/Standard Front Seats Overview.

Side airbag, driver/passenger side

‹› Removing

-

Disconnect the battery ground (GND) strap.

-

Remove seat => [ Power Front Memory Seat ] See: Body and Frame/Seats/Service and Repair/Removal and Replacement/Power Front Memory
Seats.

-

Mount the fixture for seat repair (VAS 6136) on the engine and transmission holder (VAS 6095).

-

Attach the front seat to the fixture for seat repair (VAS 6136).

-

Remove backrest cover panel => [ Backrest Cover ] See: Body and Frame/Seats/Service and Repair/Removal and Replacement/Power Front
Memory Seats.

-

Pry off lower fastening strips - 9 - (Qty. 3) with a screwdriver.

-

Pry off side retainer strips - 1 - with a screwdriver and fold cover forward.

-

Cut upholstery clips - 10 - (Qty. 4) at protective cover for side airbag - 6 -.

-

Press the latch - 3 - down and disconnect the side airbag connector - 2 -. If not present, remove the side airbag including the wiring harness.

-

Remove screw - 7 -.

-

Drill out rivet - 5 -.

-

Press side airbag - 4 - upward and remove it.

‹› Installing

To install, perform the steps used in removal in reverse order. When doing so, note the following:

-

Engage side airbag - 4 - into backrest frame.

-

Press side airbag - 4 - downward until it stops. 

-

Place eye of Ground (GND) cable - 11 - between backrest frame and side airbag - 4 -.

-

Secure ground cable - 11 - with a rivet.

-

Replace screw - 7 -.

-

Bolt side airbag - 4 - on with bolt - 7 -. 

-

Make sure that airbag cable - 13 - runs through cable guide - 14 - and is secured by clip - 12 - to backrest frame.

-

Use upholstery clip pliers (V.A.G 1634) to install new upholstery clips on protective cover for side airbag.

-

Switch on ignition.

CAUTION!
No one should be in vehicle when connecting battery.

-

Connect battery ground strap.
