Axle Nut: Service and Repair

Collar bolt for outer joint of drive axle, loosening and tightening

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Loosening collar bolt for outer joint of drive axle 

-

Remove decorative wheel cover, for light-alloy wheels pull off protective cap (use pulling hook in vehicle tool kit).

CAUTION!
Vehicle must be resting on its wheels when loosening and tightening collar bolt.

Risk of accident.

-

Loosen collar bolt for outer joint of drive axle a maximum of 90° (only loosen when vehicle is standing on its wheels -danger of accident-)

Raise vehicle and remove wheel.

-

Install all five wheel bolts again hand-tight.

A second technician is required for this work step:
-

1. Technician: Sits in vehicle and operates foot brake

-

2. Technician: Remove collar bolt for drive axle.

Wheel bearings must not be burdened while collar bolt is loose or removed.

If wheel bearing is burdened by weight of vehicle itself, wheel bearing will be predamaged. This will diminish wheel bearing service life.

If it should be necessary to move a vehicle whose drive axle has been removed, then before doing so, install an outer joint in place of the drive axle
and tighten it to 200 Nm, or else wheel bearing will be damaged.

Tightening collar bolt for outer joint of drive axle

Replace collar bolt.

A second technician is required to tighten collar bolt for drive axle:
-

1. Technician: Sits in vehicle and operates foot brake.

-

2. Technician: Tightens collar bolt for drive axle only to pre-tightening torque.

Install wheel and set vehicle on the wheels.

CAUTION!
Vehicle must be resting on its wheels when loosening and tightening collar bolt.

Risk of accident.

-

Tighten collar bolt to additional torque angle (only tighten when vehicle is standing on its wheels -danger of accident-).
