Valve Guide: Service and Repair

INSPECTION

1. Remove cylinder head as outlined under Cylinder Head, Replace.
2. Remove camshaft(s) and lifters, then using a suitable valve spring compressor, remove valves. Maintain disassemble order for later assemble.
3. Remove all carbon deposits from valve guide.
4. Position dial indicator as shown in Fig.2, to check suspected guide.
5. Insert new valve into valve guide. End of valve stem must be flush with valve guide end.
6. Rock valve back and forth against dial indicator.
7. Maximum for intake valves is .039 inch. Maximum for exhaust valves is .051 inch. Replace guide(s) if reading is beyond limit.

REPLACE

1. Worn valve guides can be removed using rod tool No. 3121 and sleeve tool No. 30-23, or their equivalents.
2. Insert rod into valve guide from combustion chamber side, then push out using sleeve as a support.
3. Coat new guides with engine oil, then press into cold cylinder head from camshaft side.
4. Press guides in as far as they will go. Once valve guide shoulder is seated, do not use more than one ton of pressure, or guide shoulder may break.

Ream guides by hand using tool No. 3120, or equivalent, and a proper cutting lubricant.

5. Machine valve seats.
