Engine Control Module: Component Tests and General Diagnostics
Checking ECM Voltage Supply
NOTE:
To check the Engine Control Module (ECM) voltage supply also refer to On Board Diagnostic, "Read Measuring Value Block" function 08.
Requirements

Circuit breaker S64 must be OK (red holder in electronic box in passenger side footwell).
ECM Main Power Supply

Connect VAG 1598 test box with VAG 1598/5 adapter harness to ECM wiring harness. See: Testing and Inspection/Scan Tool Testing and
Procedures/Scan Tool Testing/Scan Tool Connecting and Initial Checks/Connecting and Testing VAG 1598 Pin Out Box

Adapter harness is not connected to ECM.

Connect US 1115 LED tester or equivalent to test box socket 18 (constant B+ supply) and successively to sockets 10, 14, 19 and 24 (Ground
connections).

LED must light up in each case.
If LED does not light up:
-
Repair open circuit using wiring diagram.
Testing ECM Holding Relay

Connect VAG 1598 test box with VAG 1598/5 adapter.

Connect ECM to VAG 1598/5 adapter.

Remove injector circuit breaker S72. (position 2, brown holder in electronic box in passenger side footwell).

Connect LED tester between test box socket 37 (B+ via ignition) and Ground (GND).

Switch ignition on.

LED must light up.
If LED does NOT light up:

Replace ECM, holding relay is defective.
If LED does light up:
-
Reinstall injector circuit breaker S72.

Crank engine for a few seconds, LED should light up with ignition on and while cranking.
If LED goes out while cranking:
-
Check injector circuit breaker S72 replace if necessary.

Check wiring for continuity between terminal 37 and circuit breaker S72 using wiring diagram.
