Crankshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation
Crank Position And Engine Speed Sensors 20V
The Crankshaft Position Sensor and Engine Speed Sensor are identical, both are located on the left side of the engine block by the flywheel. The
crankshaft position sensor scans a single steel pin that is pressed into the back of the flywheel.
The steel pin is used to provide the cylinder number one (1) TDC signal to the ECM. This signal along with the signal from the Camshaft Position
Sensor is used for engine starting. The inductive signal from the crankshaft position sensor is sent to the ECM at 62° before TDC cyl. # 1.
The engine can not be started if either of the signals from the crankshaft position sensor or engine speed sensor are not present. The engine will
continue to run if the signal from the crankshaft position sensor fails while the engine is running. The Motronic control module will use the #1 TDC
signal that was used when the engine was first started.
