Knock Sensor: Description and Operation
Knock Sensors 20V
Knock Sensor I is mounted on the left side of the cylinder block near the front. Knock Sensor II is mounted on the left side of the cylinder block near
the rear. Cylinders 1,2,3 are monitored by knock sensor I, and cylinders 4,5 are monitored by knock sensor II.
Signals from the knock sensors are used by the Motronic control module for adaptive cylinder selective knock control. The ignition timing of an
individual cylinder can be retarded if a knock is detected. If knock continues, a richer air/fuel Mixture will be used and the charge pressure is reduced.
Knock control is now adaptive which means that the system will adapt to fuel quality and driving conditions.
