S6 Wagon L5-2226cc 2.22L DOHC Turbo (AAN) (1995)
Fig. 15 Return Spring Adjustment
1. Disconnect shift lever knob and remove boot, Fig. 12.
2. Install shift linkage gauge tool No. 3286, or equivalent, onto shift lever, Fig. 13. Insert on left side into holes of upper stop, then on right side into
holes of upper stop. Shift linkage gauge tool installation.
3. Tighten knurled screw until stop knob is touching shift linkage gauge tool No. 3286, or equivalent.
4. Adjust rear torque rod, Fig. 14 Shift lever bearing "A" should be aligned to upper stop "C. Determine clearance of "D1 and "D2 with
caliper and depth gauge "B". Align shift lever bearing so that "D1" and "D2" have a difference in clearance of 0.004 inch. Rear torque rod
adjustment.
5. Tighten clamp joint of shift and torque rods.
6. Loosen knurled screw, then remove gauge tool No. 3286, or equivalent.
7. Install shift lever knob and boot.
8. Place shift lever in second gear hold shift lever against stop, then allow shift lever to move back with reduced force to pressure point and inspect
return spring travel. Return spring travel must be .12-.35 inch, measured at shift handle. If return spring travel is not as specified, then adjust center
pre-select position by moving upper stop sideways in slots, Fig. 15.
9. Inspect function of shifter by shifting through all gears.
10. Ensure reverse safety catch is effective. If not, loosen screws retaining ball housing, turn ball housing slightly, then retighten screws.
11. Shift lever must be able to move in centered pre-select position from Reverse gear plane to 3RD/4TH gear plane with out pushing and without
effort.
