Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) -K83- In Instrument Cluster

If the Engine Control Module (ECM) recognizes a malfunction that may adversely affect emission levels, the MIL comes on to indicate this.

When ignition is turned on, the ECM turns on MIL. Shortly after starting engine, ECM will turn off MIL, unless a malfunction exists that affects quality
of exhaust emissions, or signal from ECM to MIL is malfunctioning.

While engine is running, if a malfunction occurs that affects exhaust emissions, ECM will turn on MIL. (these malfunctions are located in DTC table). At
same time, ECM store this fault in memory.

The MIL can be switched on with a flashing and/or steady light. In either case fault memory is to be queried.

Steady light

A malfunction is present that affects exhaust emissions. Check Motronic-ECM and/or automatic transmission fault memory.(if available).

If a driveability issue exists and/or a customer concern is present and MIL does not turn on, fault memory must be queried. Some malfunctions may not
turn on the MIL immediately, but are still store in fault memory. These malfunctions may not be recognized by ECM until next ignition cycle.

Flashing light

A malfunction is present that may cause damage to catalytic converter (e.g. engine misfire) during current driving conditions. In this case the vehicle can
only be driven with reduced engine power
