Connect multimeter to following location (left relay carrier) to read voltage:
Relay carrier under the cover on left
Measure to
splash wall
Terminal

Battery Positive (B+)

Perform the Output check diagnosis and activate the Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299- See: Powertrain Management/Computers
and Control Systems/Testing and Inspection/Scan Tool Testing and Procedures/With Manufacturer's Scan Tool/Output Diagnostic Test Mode
(DTM), (Function 03)

Specification: Battery voltage varying; because relay is turned on and off by ECM during output check diagnosis.
If specified value is not obtained:
-
Turn ignition off.

Connect Test box V.A.G. 1598/31 to engine control module (ECM) harness. Do not connect ECM. See: Powertrain Management/Computers and
Control Systems/Testing and Inspection/Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes/Scan Tool Connecting/With Manufacturer's Scan
Tool/Electrical Testing Using VAG1598/31 Test Box

Check the following wiring connections for open circuit or short to ground (GND) and/or battery voltage (B+):
Relay carrier under the cover on left
VAG1598/31 test box
splash wall Terminal
Socket

If necessary, repair open or short circuits.
If no problems are found:
-
Replace Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299-.
Checking Voltage supply for Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Motor -V101-

Remove sound dampening (arrow).
-
Remove connector from Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Motor -V101- -1-.

Connect the voltage tester V.A.G. 1527 B between 1 and 2.

Perform the Output check diagnosis and activate the Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299-. See: Powertrain Management/Computers
and Control Systems/Testing and Inspection/Scan Tool Testing and Procedures/With Manufacturer's Scan Tool/Output Diagnostic Test Mode
