No-load Voltage, Measuring

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items

-

Multimeter VAG 1526, or VAG 1526A, or Fluke 83, or Volt-Amp tester Sun VAT 40 (or equivalent).

WARNING:

-

The battery plugs must be screwed in tightly when charging, measuring voltage or performing load tests.

-

Ensure that following notes are observed otherwise correct measurements can not be guaranteed.

NOTE:

-

If the no-load voltage measurement is carried out with the battery installed in the vehicle, the Ground strap MUST be disconnected.

-

The battery must not be subjected to electrical load from connected equipment for at least 2 hours before taking the measurements.

-

The battery must not be charged for at least 2 hours before taking the measurements.

Check the battery voltage in a no load condition as follows:

-

Switch off ignition.

-

Disconnect Ground strap at battery.

-

Test voltage between battery terminals.

-

If the tester reads 12.5 Volt or above, then the battery is OK

-

The battery no-load voltage must at no time drop below 12.5 V (Volt). If this is the case then recharge the battery immediately

-

Test voltage between battery terminals again.

-

The battery no-load voltage must not be less than 12.5 V

-

If the battery no-load voltage is not as specified, install a new battery.
