Variable Valve Timing Actuator: Testing and Inspection
Camshaft Adjustment Valve 1, Checking
The camshaft adjustment is load and RPM dependent. The electrical valve for camshaft adjustment switches oil pressure onto camshaft adjuster
(mechanical adjustment mechanisms), which adjusts the camshaft.
Recommended Special Tools, Workshop Equipment, Testers, Measuring Instruments and Auxiliary Items

V.A.G 1526 portable multimeter or V.A.G 1715 multimeter

Adapter set V. A. G 1594

Wiring diagram
Test Conditions
-
Corresponding Camshaft Adjustment Valve 1 -N205-fuses must be OK
-
Fuel Pump (FP) Relay -J17- must be OK, check
-
Battery voltage must be at least 11.5 V.
-
All electrical consumers such as, for example, lights and rear window defroster must be switched off.
-
The parking brake must be applied, otherwise the daytime running lights are switched on.
-
If the vehicle is equipped with an air conditioning system, this must be switched off.
-
The Ground (GND) connections between engine and body must be OK.
-
Ignition switched off.
Test Sequence

Measure resistance between terminals of camshaft adjustment valve.
Specification: 10 to 18 Ohms
If the specification is not obtained:
-
Replace camshaft adjustment valve,.

Erase DTC memory of ECM See: Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems/Testing and Inspection/Scan Tool Testing and
Procedures/Diagnostic Mode 04 - Erase DTC Memory

Generate readiness code See: Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems/Testing and Inspection/Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and
Readiness Codes/Generate Readiness Code
If the specification is obtained:

Connect test box to control module wiring harness. See: Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems/Testing and
Inspection/Component Tests and General Diagnostics/Test Box, Connecting For Wiring Test

Check wire between test box socket 115 + 2-pin connector terminal 2 for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Wiring resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
