Side Air Bag: Service Precautions

Safety Precautions For Side Air-bag

The following safety precautions may be updated when necessary and should therefore be re-read before performing any repair work.

WARNING:

-

Observe all safety precautions before starting work on any part of the airbag system.

-

Testing, removing, installing and repair work must only be performed by qualified, trained Service department personnel.

-

Always disconnect the battery Ground (GND) strap before working on the airbag system.

-

The side airbags are subject to the same safety precautions as the driver's and front passenger side airbags.

CAUTION:

-

Only install genuine seat and backrest covers approved for use with side airbag (identifiable by airbag label stitched on fabric).

-

No extra covers should be installed over the backrests, as this would impair the function of the side airbags.

-

The foam padding in the backrest must not be cut away in the vicinity of the side airbag.

-

When installing, make sure seam for side airbag is straight.

-

All upholstery clips (metal and plastic clips) must be replaced.

-

Always use genuine upholstery clips.

-

When installing, all upholstery clips must be installed in the same positions as the original ones.

-

If the seat cover fabric is damaged (tears, burn marks, etc.) in the vicinity of the side airbag, the cover must be replaced for safety
reasons, as otherwise the side airbag will not inflate properly.

No repairs may be performed on the backrest cover fabric near the side airbag (original fabric has special thread and exactly defined
seams).

-

All damaged components must be replaced after an accident. The original airbag unit can still be used if no signs of damage are found.

-

Side airbag units have a limited service life (sticker on passenger-side B-pillar). If side airbag units are replaced, remove renewal date
sticker from new unit and stick it over the old one on the B-pillar. Side airbag unit and sticker must be replaced after 14 years.

If the vehicle does not have a sticker on the B-pillar, the airbag replacement must be recorded in the Service Schedule.

If side airbag units are replaced, remove airbag number sticker from the new unit and stick it over the old one on the seat pan.

-

Never use upholstery needles or poke any other sharp objects through the seat cover fabric in the vicinity of the airbag and sensor mat.
