Load Test

Load Test

In conjunction with the specific gravity test, the "voltage under load" test gives a good indication of the battery condition.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items

-

Battery tester VAS 1979, VAS 5033, Christie Automotive BT-9000 (or equivalent)

NOTE:  The battery does not have to be removed or disconnected from the electrical system when using tester.

Observe accident prevention procedures, wear protective clothing i.e. protective goggles and leather gloves.

Performing "voltage under load" test

Switch off ignition.

Read operating instructions for battery tester.

Connect clamps to battery terminals as described in the operating instructions for the tester. The clamps must make proper contact with the battery
terminals.

The load current will vary depending on the battery capacity, and must be set on the tester accordingly.

The load current can also be taken from the following table.

Perform battery load test as described in operating instructions and compare test result with table.

The load test will show the battery's minimum voltage output, which is determined by the battery capacity.
The load current and the minimum voltage vary depending on the battery capacity.

Evaluating "voltage under load" test

Because of the high current load, the battery voltage will drop during this test (ohmic resistance). If a battery is in good condition, the voltage will
only drop as far as the minimum voltage quoted, which varies according to the battery capacity and the low-temperature test current. The
low-temperature test current is an indication of the battery's starting power in winter. Batteries with a high low-temperature test current are
specially important for vehicles with high compression engines.

If the battery is malfunctioning or is in a low charge state its voltage will drop quickly (voltage break-down), giving a reading below 9.0 V (Volt).
After the test is completed, the voltage will remain for some time at this low level, and only rise again slowly. A battery in this condition will not
give a usable voltage level (no-load voltage).

A malfunctioning battery with the malfunctions described above will not have the same power reserves as a battery in good condition.

A battery with these malfunctions must be disposed of.
