Maintenance-Free Battery with Visual Indicator, Checking Color Display

Procedure

-

To obtain an accurate reading, gently tap the magic eye - arrow - with a screwdriver handle or rock the vehicle slightly.

NOTE:

-

When recharging the battery and while driving, air bubbles can form below the "magic eye" and result in an incorrect color display.
Tapping releases the air bubbles under the "magic eye".

The "magic eye" can be installed at various locations on top of battery.

Because the "magic eye" is located in a single cell, the indication is only valid for that cell. The procedure for making an accurate
assessment of the battery condition depends on the vehicle: on vehicles without the Energy Management Control Module J644  See:

Analyzer MCR340A, on vehicles with the Energy Management Control Module J644  See: Component Tests and General

If no diagnostic system is available, the battery test can be performed on vehicles with the Energy Management Control Module J644 using
the Battery Tester With Printer VAS 5097A.  See: Component Tests and General Diagnostics/Diagnosis and Testing/Battery, Testing With
Midtronics Battery/Starting/Charging System Analyzer MCR340A

Check the battery condition using the color indicator. There are three possible color indications:

Color indicator

Battery status

Green

Battery adequately charged for testing

Black

No charge or charge too low.

Colorless or yellow

Risk of explosion, the battery must not be tested or charged.

CAUTION:

Risk of explosion on discharged battery with magic eye.

If the magic eye has no color or is light yellow, the battery may not be tested or charged. Jump starting must not be used! There is a risk
of explosion during testing, charging or jump starting. The battery must be replaced.

NOTE:

If the battery must be replaced, follow the disposal regulations.
