Battery Interrupt Igniter N253, Removing And Installing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Removing

CAUTION:

-

Battery Interrupt Igniters N253 are pyrotechnic components. The same safety measures apply as with airbags. Observe safety
precautions for work on airbags.

Observe disposal of pyrotechnic airbag units.

NOTE:

-

If the Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) K75 lights up after an accident, check using whether crash data have been stored. If this is the
case, check whether the malfunction 001 Resistance too large is saved in Battery Interrupt Igniter N253 DTC memory. If this is the case, Battery
Interrupt Igniter N253 must be replaced.

The Battery Interrupt Igniter N253 interrupts the circuit electrically each time an airbag is deployed. The Battery Interrupt Igniter N253 must
always be replaced after a deployment.

Switch off ignition and remove ignition key.

-

Remove cover from luggage compartment floor.

-

Disconnect the battery ground (GND) strap.

-

Disconnect battery positive strap - 1 - and remove it with auxiliary fuse panel cover.

-

Remove nuts - 2 -.

-

Remove Battery Interrupt Igniter N253 - 5 -.

CAUTION:  Before handling belt tensioner units (e.g. disconnecting electrical connector), the person handling it must "electrostatically
discharge". This can be done by touching door striker, for example.
