Steering Column, Checking For Damage

Steering column, checking for damage 

Visual check 

-

Check all steering column parts for damage.

Function test 

-

Check that the steering column turns easily and smoothly.

-

Check that the steering column can be adjusted for height and reach.

Deformation elements in the steering column are designed to shift in an accident.

These are located at the two upper bolted mountings on the steering column.

If damage has occurred, remove steering column to the extent required to allow you to check dimension - a -. 

Note the different steering column types.

Steering column type: 1

Use drift - 3204 - as an aid when measuring.

-

Measure with a sliding caliper.

-

Dimension a: max. 23 mm

-

If dimension - a - is larger than 23 mm, the steering column is damaged and must be replaced. 

Steering column type: 2 

-

Check if there is a gap dimension - A - between the slide and the mounting bracket.

-

If dimension - A - is larger than 0.5 mm, the steering column is damaged and must be replaced.
