Steering Gear: Procedures
Power Steering Gear (ZF), Adjusting

Power steering gear (ZF), adjusting

Note:  Two technicians are required to perform adjustment. Adjust with engine switched off.

-

Raise vehicle on platform.

-

Wheels in straight-ahead position.

-

If there is excessive play in the steering, a knocking noise will be audible when the steering wheel is turned backward and forward (about 30°)
either side of center position.

-

In this case, have the second technician carefully screw in the adjusting screw - arrow - into the cover until the knocking noise can no longer be
heard inside the vehicle.

-

Test drive the vehicle and check that the steering centers smoothly by itself back to the straight-ahead position after a turn. Correct the adjustment
if necessary.

-

Secure adjusting nut to stop it from turning by making a center punch mark in the collar of the steering gear housing.
