Suspension Strut / Shock Absorber: Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures
Noisy Shock Absorbers
Noisy shock absorbers
Shock absorbers are often replaced because of rattling noises experienced by the customer. Inspections on the test rig and in the vehicle have shown
that in approx. 70% of these cases the complaints and subsequent replacement were not justified.
Proceed as follows for complaints involving rattling or cracking noises:
-
Determine where, when and how noises develop during a road test with the customer - if possible road test vehicle on a dry, uneven driving
surface.
-
Use trouble shooting table "Noises at front and rear end of vehicle" for troubleshooting "Special Information; "Troubleshooting. Suspension"
Note: These noises are very rarely caused by the shock absorbers.
