Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) -K83- In Instrument Cluster

If the engine control module detects faults which result in increased exhaust emissions, these faults are indicated by the Malfunction Indicator Lamp in
the instrument cluster.

The engine control module activates the Malfunction Indicator Lamp when the ignition is switched on. The warning lamp will go out soon after the
engine starts, provided that the engine control module does not detect any faults resulting in increased exhaust emissions and the activation of the lamp
via the engine control module is working properly.

If a fault which causes an increase in exhaust emissions is detected while the engine is running, the engine control module will activate the Malfunction
Indicator Lamp (these faults are identified accordingly in the DTC table). At the same time a DTC is stored in the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)
memory of the engine control module.

The Malfunction Indicator Lamp operates either with a flashing or a permanent light. check Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory in any case.

Permanent light:

This indicates a malfunction that causes an increase in exhaust emissions. check Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory of Motronic control module
and automatic gearbox (if fitted). Check Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory if the vehicles does not run properly or the customer reports problems
with the vehicle's performance, but the Malfunction Indicator Lamp does not indicate any fault. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory might
have stored faults which the Malfunction Indicator Lamp does not indicate immediately, but only after the fault is detected when the engine is started
again.

Flashing light:

This indicates a malfunction which will cause damage to the catalytic converter if the vehicle is driven under the present conditions (e.g. misfiring).
Operate vehicle with reduced power.
