Valve Guide: Service and Repair

INSPECTION

1. Remove cylinder head as outlined under Cylinder Head.
2. Remove hydraulic lifters, maintain order for later assemble.
3. Using a suitable valve spring compressor, remove valves from cylinder head. Maintain order for later assemble.
4. Remove all carbon deposits from valve guide.
5. Install a suitable dial indicator, set to bear against valve head on combustion chamber side of cylinder head to check suspected guide.
6. Insert new valve into valve guide until it is fully inserted into guide.
7. Rock valve back and forth against dial indicator.
8. Maximum clearance for intake valves is 0.04 inch. Maximum clearance for exhaust valves is 0.05 inch. Replace guide(s) if reading is beyond

limit.

REPLACEMENT

1. Worn valve guides can be removed using rod tool 3121 or equivalent.
2. Press worn guides out from combustion chamber side. Use sleeve tool 3023 or equivalent during this procedure for proper support.
3. Coat new guides with engine oil, then press into cold cylinder head from camshaft side.
4. Press guides in until contact is made.Once valve guide shoulder is seated, do not use more than one ton of pressure, or guide shoulder may break.
5. Ream guides by hand using tool 3121 or equivalent, and a proper cutting lubricant.
