A/C Signal: Testing and Inspection

The A/C relay signals the ECM when the air conditioning is turned on by applying regulated 12 volt signal to ECM terminal 40.
 

1.

Ignition and A/C OFF. From the back of ECM connector, connect the negative lead of an LED test light to terminal 54 (ground) and positive lead
to terminal 40 (signal) . 

2.

Turn ignition ON.

LED should be "OFF" or very dim.

3.

Turn A/C to "AUTO", temperature on lowest setting, blower on "HIGH".

After approx. 6 seconds, LED should turn ON (or if it was already dimly lit, it should become much brighter).

a. If OK, go to step 4.
b. If LED does not indicate signal change, disconnect ECM harness connector and repeat test from step 1.
c. If after repeating test with ECM disconnected, LED still does not indicate a change in signal voltage, check wiring between ECM connector

terminal 40 and A/C relay terminal 4/87a for open or short to ground. If wiring is OK, replace A/C relay. 

d. If LED did not indicate a change with ECM connected, but DID indicate a change with ECM disconnected, then the ECM is faulty (ECM

terminal 40 grounded internally all the time). Go to step 5.

4.

LED still connected, depress accelerator pedal all the way and hold.

LED should go "OFF" or become very dim for approx. 12 seconds and then come back ON.

a. If OK, ECM and A/C relay signals are OK.
b. If LED stays brightly lit (no change when accelerator pedal is depressed), check full throttle switch and circuit. Refer to Powertrain

Management/Computers and Control Systems/Throttle Full Open Switch/Testing and Inspection/Procedures or Powertrain
Management/Computers and Control Systems/Throttle Position Sensor/Testing and Inspection/Procedures. If full throttle switch is
OK, go to step 5.

5.

With ignition and A/C turned OFF, disconnect harness connector from ECM.

6.

Connect DVM between ECM harness connector terminals 40 (signal) and 54 (ground). Set DVM to 200mA range.

7.

Turn ignition ON, turn A/C to "AUTO", temperature on lowest setting, blower on "HIGH". Note current reading.

Approximately 30-35mA.

a. If OK, then A/C relay is OK and you should have been referred to step 5 by condition described in step 3d. Replace ECM unit only.
b. If current is much less than 30mA, A/C relay is faulty (replace relay).
c. If current is much greater than 35mA, either the A/C relay is faulty or there is a short to battery power. [1] Check wiring between ECM

terminal 40 and A/C relay terminal 4/87a for short to positive. If not shorted to power, replace relay and ECM. If wire from relay to ECM is
found to be shorted to a power source, ECM has been damaged. Repair short to power and repeat steps 5, 6, & 7 (curent check) before
replacing ECM. Do not operate A/C with new ECM if current reading in step 7 is incorrect. 

 
[1] A short circuit to positive at ECM terminal 40 (or unregulated current to ECM terminal 40 from A/C relay) will damage the ECM. This condition, if
present, may be due to a wiring problem or a faulty A/C relay. In either case, the ECM must be replaced.
 
A/C AUXILIARY SIGNAL CHECKING

1.

With ignition turned OFF, connect LED test light between ECM connector terminal 41 (signal) and 54 (ground), from back of harness connector.

2.

Turn ignition ON, turn A/C to "AUTO", temperature on lowest setting, blower on "HIGH".

LED should light.

a. If LED lights, signal and ECM are OK.
d. If LED does not light, or comes on very dim, turn A/C and ignition OFF and continue.

3.

With ignition OFF, disconnect harness connector from ECM and connect LED test light as in step 1 of this test.

4.

Turn ignition ON, turn A/C to "AUTO", temperature on lowest setting, blower on "HIGH", and note LED.

a. If LED still does not light, check for open or short to ground in wire between A/C control head terminal 23 and ECM terminal 41.
b. If LED now lights, ECM terminal 41 is shorted to ground internally (faulty ECM).
