Idle Speed: Adjustments

The V8 motronic does not provide for adjustment of either the air/fuel ratio or the idle speed. If either is not within specified range, perform vehicle
self diagnosis and output checks. Make any necessary repairs and re-check.

 
Checking Idle Speed and Air/Fuel Mixture

Before checking exhaust CO content, observe the following conditions.

Engine is at normal operating temperature.

All electrical loads turned OFF (A/C, cooling fan, heater blower, etc.)

Disconnect and plug vacuum hose to carbon canister shut-off/frequency valve.

2.

Connect sniffer hose from exhaust analyzer to CO tap (located under car on the front of the junction where exhaust tubes from either bank come
together).

3.

Start engine and let idle.

Idle speed must be 650 - 770 RPM

4.

Check CO content on analyzer.

CO must be 0.5-0.9% by volume.

 
NOTE A fouled spark plug, no spark or poor spark at one plug will increase CO content by approx. 1.5%. If CO is too high, check ignition system. Be

sure all cylinders are firing and there are no vacuum leaks.
