Camshaft Position Sensor: Testing and Inspection
VOLTAGE TEST
-
With the ignition OFF.
-
Disconnect both power output sates at the ignition coils
-
Disconnect plug from distributors hall effect unit.
-
Connect a DVOM to terminals 1 and 3 of the distributor harness.
-
Turn the ignition on and check voltage reading.
^
Must be 4.5 - 5.5 volts
-
Turn ignition OFF
-
Connect DVOM to terminals 2 and 3 of the distributor harness.
-
Turn the ignition on and check voltage reading.
^
Must be 4.3 - 5.2 volts
-
Turn ignition OFF
-
If voltages are not correct check wiring continuity using the procedure in this article.
SIGNAL TEST
-
Pull back boot on connector for distributor unit.
-
Reconnect the distributor unit.
-
Disconnect both power output stages at the ignition coils.
-
Back probe the connector at terminals 1 and 2 with an LED tester.
-
Crank engine and the LED must flash every other engine revolution.
-
If voltages are correct but LED does not flash, replace hall effect unit in distributor.
WIRING TEST
-
Turn Ignition OFF
-
Disconnect the ECM harness connector.
-
Disconnect the distributor harness connector.
-
Check the continuity of each wire from the distributor harness connector to the ECM harness connector using the list of terminal assignments.

If wiring is correct but voltages are not correct replace ECM.
