Camshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation

DESCRIPTION

The Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor is a hall effect sensor located inside the left distributor. The CMP Sensor signal is used to recognize ignition
point for cylinder number one (1) for starting the engine. The signal is also used for cylinder selective knock control and to determine fuel
injection timing and sequence.

If the CMP Sensor fails during engine operation the fuel injection sequence is started via the ignition timing signal. The ignition timing is retarded
by 16° and knock control is stopped.

NOTE:

SELF DIAGNOSIS

The CMP Sensor signal is monitored by the ECM and sets a fault code if the signal is not present or it is not in time with the reference signal.

Diagnostic Trouble Code # 00515 is displayed on the VAG 1551 scan tool for a bad signal.

Diagnostic Trouble Code # 00512 is displayed on the VAG 1551 scan tool for an out of time sensor.

Blink Code # 2113 is displayed using blink code extraction for a bad signal.

Blink Code # 2114 is displayed using blink code extraction for an out of time sensor.

SIGNAL SUBSTITUTION

There is no substitude signal for this component but the engine can be started if the CMP Sensor signal is not present. In this case, it is possible
that the fuel injection sequence is delayed by 360°.
