Use the following procedure to accurately check the fluid level in the 4-speed 018 automatic transmission.

Note

The transmission fluid level only needs to be checked when diagnosing a suspected transmission problem.

Always check the transmission fluid level with the vehicle level, transmission at operating temperature, selector lever in "Park" position and with the
engine idling.

Preferred method

^

remove dipstick plug Part No. 018 321 431 E

^

use tool VAG 1558 to measure ATF temperature

^

must be: 60-80~C (140-176~F)

^

if fluid temperature is below 60~C (140~F) run engine until fluid temperature is between 60-80~C (140-176~F)

^

check fluid level
