Control Module: Description and Operation

FUNCTIONS

The Transmission Control Module (TCM) (J 217) is responseble for controling all shift pionts of the automatic transmission.

The TCM monitors Vehicle speed, engine speed, throttle position, shiftlever position and transmission mode selection.

It controls the shift points based on these inputs. 

The TCM also has On Board Diagnosis capablities and a fault memory.

The TCM sends a shift point signal to the Motronic ECM so the ECM can recognize upshifts and downshifts of the automatic transmission.
The ECM retards the ignition timing and reduces engine torque to smooth out shifts.

The signal from the throttle position potentiometer is digitalized (pulse width modulated) in the Motronic ECM and delivered to the automatic
transmission control module.

Diagnostic Memory 

If problems occur at monitored sensors or components, they are stored in memory. 

Faults which occur occasionally or sporadically are stored as intermittent faults. 

The TCM can store 23 different faults , Refer to DTC Charts.

Faults are stored until the fault memory is cancelled.

Output Diagnosis Test Mode (DTM)

The TCM is also equipped with output diagnosis for 8 output checks.

TCM Identification and Coding

The self-diagnosis is not limited to storing, activating, erasing and the actuator diagnosis, but also offers additional applications - control unit
identification and coding.

Limp-Home Mode

Faults which affect vehicle operation cause the transmission to go into Limp-Home mode 

This is indicated in the selector lever display when all display segments are lit up at the same time.
