Wheels and tyres
The E87 is equipped as standard with tyres with emergency-running characteristics: Even with a flat tyre, the
vehicle is able to be driven at moderate speeds for up to 150 km.
If the tyre bursts, the vehicle remains steerable.
The E87 has no spare wheel and no spare wheel well. The luggage compartment floor is flat.

There are many ways that engine output can be converted into forward traction. However, dynamism is only
generated when power is transmitted to the rear axle. The superiority of rear-wheel drive results from the laws of
dynamics: The moments of inertia generated when accelerating shift a particularly heavy load onto the rear axle.
When pulling away from standstill, vehicles with front-wheel drive have different dynamics in their power
transmission: When they accelerate, load is relieved from the front end. This means that the traction of the
driven front wheels is also reduced.
With rear-wheel drive, the dynamic load on the rear wheels has a positive effect.
Load is dynamically shifted to the rear wheels as follows: As the vehicle accelerates, the axle load is shifted from
the front to the rear axle. This increases the traction of the rear wheels, enabling the rear wheels to transmit the
drive torque better.
The E87 has a balanced, "neutral" axle-load distribution, with 50 percent of the gross weight on each of the
front and rear axles.
If the vehicle is driven fast through a corner, the lateral forces act equally on both axles. This enhances driving
stability. Contact between the tyres and the road surface is retained even on difficult surfaces.
The positive effects of rear-wheel drive are even more pronounced when the vehicle is fully laden.
This neutral axle-load distribution of 50:50 enables the vehicle to overcome even critical situations supremely.
In extreme situation, DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) supports driving stability.
DSC is standard on the E87. The dynamic driving characteristics of the BMW 1-Series are not affected.
