Replacement of toothed belt at Inspection II

M40

Subject: 

The latest field research has shown that the Inspection specifications regarding
checking/replacing the toothed belt are not always properly adhered to. This is also
confirmed by an examination of breakdown statistics made by an automobile club.

Effect: 

As a result of this, problems with the toothed belt often tend to arise either after 60 000 -
80 000 km or after 120 000 km. 

Affected
vehicles:

E30, E34 and E36 with M40
- throughout the entire period of manufacture -

Action: 

The current specification: check the tension of the toothed belt and replace at the first
Inspection II (approx. 40 000 - 45 000 km) if it is less than the prescribed minimum is to
be disregarded. 

Procedure:

As from September 1995 the toothed belt should always be replaced at every  Inspection  
II  (on average after approx. 45.000 - 90.000 and 135.000 - 180.000 km). As such the
tension of the toothed belt no longer needs checking.

The second specification regarding replacement: "after 4 years at the latest "continues to
be valid on account of the effect of environmental factors on the durability of toothed belts
(high ozone levels etc.). 

Notes:

The adjustment requirements for the new toothed belt given in the Repair
Instructions for Group 11 and in Service Information bulletin
11 07 91 (413) of Sept. '91also remain valid

With immediate effect it is no longer permitted to replace the toothed belt under
warranty through the usual reimbursement channels

The flat rates have been modified in accordance with the new specifications and
are contained in SI 00 13 95 (973) and all editions of the E36 Flat Rate Manual
published after 9/95.

Job number 11 31 610 (additional work: replacement of toothed belt as part of
Inspection II if the tension is less than the minimum prescribed value) has been
rendered invalid since September 1995.

Contrary to the information contained in the new 8/95 edition of the Inspection
Sheets for Model Years 90/91/93, the toothed belt replacement has already been
taken into account in the flat rate specifications published as from 9/95 and this
work should no longer be invoiced separately. 

Parts: 

To ensure that the increased costs remain within acceptable limits, the gross selling price
of the toothed belt is to be reduced as from 01.01.1996.
