Fuel gauge reading falls rapidly
E36
Complaint:
The fuel gauge reading rapidly falls to just below the 60 l marking after the fuel tank has
been filled right up.
Cause:
The float of the lever-operated sensor indicates a low fuel level due to a bubble of air which
becomes trapped in the ventilation dome of the left-hand chamber of the fuel tank when the
tank has been completely filled.
Affected
vehicles:
E36 (ex E36 compact)
Period of manufacture: from the start of series production to round about
03/95.
Procedure:
In the event of this complaint arising, the instrument cluster should be recoded with the
encoding programme V13.0 (or a later version). Please also refer to IDC 014/95-10. This
modifies the upper section of the tank characteristic map in the instrument cluster.
Replacing the lever-operated sensor does nothing to alleviate this problem.
